2 minute read

When I was young, I read Miles Davis’s autobiography. One story stayed with me: Cannonball Adderley, a music teacher and band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Miles loved his playing so much that he invited him to join his band and go on tour. Cannonball hesitated because he had a steady job as a teacher.

Reading that, I made a quiet decision. If I wanted to play jazz, I would first become a teacher. I loved teaching anyway. So I went to graduate school for education and earned my teaching certificate. I never taught in a regular school in Korea. Yet here I am in Germany, steadily teaching students at a municipal music school, with the title of jazz piano teacher.

Perhaps, deep down, I was longing for security, before marriage and after. Perhaps I simply never found the courage to leap into this field. But I told myself that to make the music I love, I needed solid ground first. And I believed the answer was to keep going, without worrying about anyone else’s expectations, and to do my own work steadily.

Cannonball did leave teaching. He took to the road, toured the world, and became a legend. A classroom was too small a place for such a gift; it would have been a loss to jazz history. And yet, looking into his mind, and at his playing and thinking, so deeply academic and educational, I could see my own life more clearly.

Now I am a mother of two, a teacher at my school, and a jazz musician. I try every day to find the balance between home, work, and the stage. Living in Germany has been a gift. Through it all, I have never lost my direction. I had no time to listen to other people’s voices, and no time to worry about how I was seen.

Today, to find my footing again, I remembered Cannonball Adderley in that book.
